Maybe it sounds strange, but how about using it by just walking/marching/jogging on the spot, without a treadmill?

It would be helpful to add "rebounder" for things like sand running and backwoods hikes. A treadmill is just too smooth-surfaced for hiking or beach running, etc.

This is exactly what i do. Select treadmill for the motion tracking. It works perfectly. For the coached runs, when they tell you to raise the effort level, just lift your knees higher.

Oh! Forgot! I wear a Wahoo TICKR Run chest strap to get the correct hiking data and calories. Now it gives good distance and average pace too!

It already does that. I use a rebounder and generally choose "hike" because it feels life climbing on uneven terrain and is human-powered. Wonderful! Then I edit it for distance using a Pebble workout-pedometer. Works like a dream!
You can also have Map My Hike running in the background if you do choose.

I select the treadmill option and walk in place with the phone propped up in front of me. Works great!

This is already supported! Just place the device such that front-facing camera is facing you, on a table or even the floor, and you can walk in place in front of it and have the video progress. Just choose treadmill from the device selection, even if you're not actually on a treadmill (just refers to using your legs in walking/running fashion).
