Currently all BitGym applications, including Virtual Active, only support what is known as "AirPlay Mirroring" this is only available on:

iPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 6, 5S

iPad 2, 3, Mini, Retina and Air

You can achieve this mirroring by connecting wirelessly to an Apple TV unit, or you can achieve it over a wire using a HDMI cable and the special apple HDMI adapter. 

It's true that older devices such as an iPad1, iPod Touch 4 or iPhone 4 are capable of airplay, but only if the applications have special support for breaking out the video stream and sending just that to the airplay receiver.
